What happens to Mosquitoes in the Winter? It may seem that mosquitoes are nowhere to be found during the winter then suddenly emerge with a force around spring. So, where do those pesky Houston mosquitoes go during the colder months? Most mosquitoes spend the winter as eggs although many adult female mosquito species can live throughout the winter months hiding under piles of dead leaves, under loose tree bark, deep in animal borrows or in cracks of buildings where they are provided protection from the cold. Mosquitoes mate during the fall then the male usually dies. The surviving adult females look for shelter until weather conditions are more favorable for laying her eggs. As soon as the temperature warms again, she will search for a blood meal in order to develop her eggs. Because mosquito larvae require water, once the female mosquitoes have fed, they will look for any place with standing water to lay their eggs. As spring is fast approaching with it will come warmer temperatures and adequate rain fall, both creating a perfect environment for mosquitoes.
